A short biography of Mr Ando

Ever wondered who was the brain behind the instant noodles you so often eat? Momofuku Ando, considered by many to be one of Asia’s greatest inventors in the past century, successfully found the recipe for the perfect instant noodles after months and months of trial and error on 25th August, 1958. He was 48 years old then.

Known to most people by his Japanese name, Ando was however Taiwanese by birth. It was only after World War 2 did he become a Japanese citizen. The inspiration for instant noodles came when Ando saw long lines of hungry civilians queuing for food outside traditional ramen stalls. Then, there was intense food shortage due to the war. Hence, Ando sought to create a type of noodle that can be cooked and eaten “anytime” and “anywhere”.

In 1972, at the age of 61, Ando came up with his next invention--- the cup noodles. This stroke of inspiration came when Ando witnessed the way Americans eat their instant noodles ---- by breaking them into half and eating them out of a cup with a fork.

Ando died of a heart failure on 5th January 2007, leaving behind a legacy. Nearly 50 years after the birth of instant noodles, many people worldwide are still waiting 3 minutes for their instant noodles to cook, before tucking in to enjoy a good simple meal.
